After checking out of our hostel in Perth, we travelled the short distance to Perth airport to pick up our hire car and make our way down to Margaret Rover for a few days.
It was a nice surprise that we got an upgrade on the car we booked through booking.com and ended up getting a Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid.
From Perth Airport, Margaret river was about a 3hr drive. We stopped to see a few places along the coast on our way down.
The first stop was Mandurah. This was a small city with a harbour, esplanade walks, and marina restaurants.

The harbour was really nice with great views out to sea. There is also lots of wildlife in the water around the area, we didn’t spot any but did see these!

After Mandurah, we went further down the coast arriving at Bunbury. We visited the town and went to the Mangrove Boardwalk at Leschenault.

The boardwalk weaves through the mangroves for around 200m and is very popular with bird watchers, as there’s around 60 different species of birds in the area including Black Swan, Osprey, Buff-banded Rail, and Sandpiper.

From Bunbury, we travelled to Busselton Jetty. It’s the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere at 1.8km.

There is a small solar-powered tourist train that runs the full length of the jetty.

After Busselton, we travelled the short distance to Margaret River, a famous wine region producing the majority of Australia’s premium wine. It’s also known for its surfing, amazing coastline and nature.
Western Australia had some incredible landscapes and beaches that were completely empty!

Margaret river itself was a small but very lively town with cafes, bakeries, surf shops and wine cellars. We really enjoyed the laid back vibe of the town.
From the town we did a visit to a winery, where we got to try some wines and explore the vineyards. There was also a nougat factory and the free samples were much appreciated!

There were also some interesting towns in the area. This one specialised in all things cow – Cowaramup!

The town has 42 life-sized fiberglass cow sculptures and every cow souvenir you could ever dream of!
Near Margaret river there are also loads of cave systems to visit. We visited Ngilgi Cave, with its incredible limestone stalactites and stalagmites!

Western Australia had some of the best scenery and landscapes and the Margaret River region was definitely worth visiting!
