Incredible Taiwan: Shifen & Jiufen

On our final full day in Taiwan, we visited the towns of Shifen and Jiufen.

We first went to Shifen, which was about 1hr and a half from our accommodation in Taipei. It was a very hot day around 30° and 85% humidity!

We got to Shifen early to beat the crowds but it seemed everyone had the same idea!

Shifen was a picturesque mountain town, which is known for its charming Old Street, release of sky lanterns, and waterfall.

We walked through the old street first, towards the waterfall.

The walk to the waterfall was across suspension bridges and through gardens.

We then arrived at Shifen waterfall, often referred to as ‘little Niagara of Taiwan’.

We then walked back through the town towards the lantern release on the historic tracks of Old Street.

The lantern release has cultural significance and is an opportunity to send any wishes and prayers skyward in a unique setting.

We first picked our lantern and then you are given a paintbrush to write on the lantern with.

We wrote one for Lynn, Bethany’s mum on one side, and health and happiness for friends and family on the other.

You then take your lantern onto the tracks (no longer is use!), where they are lit and released into the sky.

This was a really special experience in such a unique setting.

In the afternoon, we went to Jiufen on the train. When we arrived there were stunning views of the Pacific Ocean!

Juifen old street was bustling with food stalls, souvenir shops and tea houses.

We took a break from the crowds and stumbled upon an incredible tea house!

We tried delicious Taiwanese tea and learned about the very precise brewing process, with a fantastic backdrop!

This was a great way to round off an amazing time in Taiwan with its natural beauty, culture and history.
